Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In THE PYRATES, the author of the celebrated Flashman novels pays tongue-in-cheek homage to the swashbuckling books and movies that have always stirred his imagination. In these rollicking pages you'll find tall ships and desert islands; impossibly gallant adventurers and glamorous heroines; devilishly sinister cads and ghastly dungeons; improbably acrobatic duels and hair's-breadth escapes; and more plot twists than you can shake a rapier at. A deliriously entertaining combination of Errol Flynn action-adventure and Naked Gun pastiche.

Synopsis:

The Pyrates is George MacDonald Fraser's tongue-in-cheek homage to the swashbucklers of yore. A deliriously entertaining combination of high-seas action-adventure and comic hi-jinx.

Synopsis:

Captain Blood meets Leslie Nielsen in this exuberant, affectionate, and hilariously anachronistic send-up of swashbuckling sagas and pirate adventure yarns.

One of my absolute favorites! I came accross this book while wandering in a bookstore during a break in a conference. I saw the title and thought that it might be interesting. Read the back cover and decided that it would be worth a try. Read it from cover to cover for the first of many, many times that same evening. I laughed, giggled, wiggled my eyebrows...this book is a terrific sendup of swashbuckling movies and a comment on how we perceive history through our modern eyes. Recommended for anyone who can laugh at themselves and our world around us.
