Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In one of her most deeply felt works of fiction, Le Guin explores the dreams and sorrows of the inhabitants of Klatsand, Oregon, a beach town where ordinary people bring their dreams and sorrows for a weekend or the rest of their lives, and sometimes learn to read what the sea writes on the sand. Searoad is the story of a particular place that could be any place, and of a people so distinctly drawn they could be any of us.

Review:

"[D]eeply satisfying reading — rich, warm, and as easy on the soul as an afternoon on the beach. Another triumph." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Like all great writers of fiction, Ursula K. Le Guin creates imaginary worlds that restore us, hearts eased, to our own." The Boston Globe

About the Author

Ursula K. Le Guin's first story was rejected by Amazing Stories — back when she was 11 years old. Since then, Le Guin has become one of science fiction's most critically acclaimed authors, as well as a versatile writer of poetry, children's books, essays, and nonfiction.

I found this book absolutely fascinating. Several years ago, my husband and I were traveling north along the Oregon Coast. It was late and all the motels were displaying "no vacancy" signs. We decided to turn down a road and head into a small town along the coast. It was a quaint little village with cabins for rent. The description in Searoad of the village of Klatsand is nearly identical to that town we stayed at and I was able to relate to the story as it unfolded.
And what a story it was!
Interesting, real characters who had to deal with what life threw at them. A conglomeration of how each individual fit into the town and yet, maintained their own identities in their private lives.
Excellent reading!
