Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

The Creative Family: How to Encourage Imagination & Nurture Family Connections Cover

Staff Pick

In economic depressions, we tend to spend more time at home with our families, finding entertainment in the things around us. Amanda Blake Soule lays out many art and craft projects for parents and kids that highlight using and appreciating what you have, in addition to honoring the time we have with our children. Her parenting philosophy is Waldorf-inspired, very down-to-earth and earth-friendly. She's even inspired this un-crafty new mom to take up embroidery and quilting — and I'm really enjoying them. Keep an eye out for her forthcoming book, Handmade Home, due out in August 2009.

Truly one of the best books I have ever read. As Teacher to a student with autism, I am always on the lookout for good "crafty"-type books suitable for a teenaged boy. What I found inside this book far exceeded my expectations-it is a wonderfully imaginative treatise on how to live creatively by incorporating the arts/humanities daily. Clearly, it is focused on families, particularly those with young children, yet as a newlywed with a family of two, I found its themes of "intentional living" and rituals relevant to my personal life. I would recommend this book to all curious folk wanting to embrace their own creativity. You can also find the author's daily-ish blog (the inspiration for the book) at soulemama.com.
