Dogs of Dreamtime: A Story about Second Chances and the Power of Loveby Karen Shanley
Synopses & Reviews
"A book for people who love their dogs beyond all measure-and who realize, with Karen Shanley, that dogs love us in the same way- sometimes beyond what we deserve. I defy you to remain impervious to the magic it contains."--Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson, best-selling author of When Elephants Weep, and Dogs Never Lie About Love
How intense a bond can man and dog truly forge? What's a person to do when her world is whole only with a beloved dog-but her family is not as keen on the idea? When does a dog's behavior become too dangerous for even the most loving person to accept? Karen Shanley
tackles all these questions in lyrical prose that brings to life her relationships with three very different dogs: Kiera, who came to her in a dream; Molly, Kiera's beautiful deaf sister; and Magic, the scrawny rescue dog who captures Karen's heart. Dogs of Dreamtime is Karen's story: It's about a time when she is forced to take a long, hard look at what matters and what does not, what she can control and what she cannot. And about the hard choices-choices of life
and death-she has to make to keep moving forward. In the same way that her dogs bring to Karen experiences of joy, struggle, and, ultimately, uplifting change, this book will touch every reader.
"Clearly besotted by her dogs, Shanley, managing partner of a marketing and communications firm, recounts her relationship with three of them. Though she swore to remain dogless after her beloved Sheltie, Kiera, died, Shanley dreamed about an Australian shepherd puppy. Convinced that the puppy was Kiera reincarnated, and over the objections of her long-suffering husband, Andrew, she found the new Kiera of her dreams and adopted her along with Molly, a deaf merle. The author details how Andrew came around and describes the joy the animals' antics gave her young daughter. Along the way, she provides an informative and touching description of how she learned to train the deaf Molly. Unfortunately, dominance was a problem between the two dogs, and she had to find Molly a new home. Later, Shanley took in Magic, an English shepherd mix with whom she felt a kind of mystical bond when she saw his picture on the Internet. But Magic became violent and had to be put to sleep. The author's subsequent depression led to a trip to Montana, where communing with open spaces renewed her spirit and restored her equilibrium. Dog lovers will enjoy this tale and share Shanley's passion for her dogs." Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)
Dogs of Dreamtime is the story of one woman's deep connection with her three very different dogs, and the extraordinary emotional journey they embark on together. Ultimately, it's about how the unexpected events in our lives shape who we are and who we will become.
The book begins: Their banshee wails reached through my dreams and dragged me back . . . For the past two years, these coyotes had taken to howling nights at the edges of our property, just as major events were about to unfold.
This call of the coyotes turns out to be a signal that Karen Shanley's journey with her dogs is coming full circle. She is about to be offered a chance at redemption, with one condition: She has to find a way to recapture her faith in life itself.
Karen Shanley's lyrical story will have you laughing, crying, and nodding your head in understanding.
