Publisher Comments:

In an evocative and fast-paced adventure on the high seas and on a faraway island an orphan boy named Peter and his mysterious new friend, Molly, overcome bands of pirates and thieves in their quest to keep a fantastical secret safe and save the world from evil. Bestselling authors Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson have turned back the clock and revealed a wonderful story that precedes J. M. Barrie's beloved Peter Pan. Peter and the Starcatchers is brimming with richly developed characters from the scary but somehow familiar Black Stache and the ferocious Mister Grin to the sweet but sophisticated Molly and the fearless Peter. Riveting adventure takes listeners on a journey from a harsh orphanage in old England to a treacherous sea in a decrepit old tub. Aboard the Never Land is a trunk that holds a magical substance with the power to change the fate of the world - just a sprinkle and wounds heal and just a dusting and people can fly.Towering seas and a violent storm are the backdrop for battles at sea. Bone-crushing waves eventually land our characters on Mollusk Island - where the action really heats up.

Review:

"Having proven his talent for portraying all manner of colorful British characters with panache, Grammy-winning narrator Dale (the Harry Potter books) serves up another cast of winners on this recording. Authors Barry and Pearson take a wild flight of fancy in co-creating a prequel to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. Gruff and vain pirates, wicked mermaids, talking dolphins, treasure and magic are at the heart of this adventure tale introducing orphan Peter and a spunky girl named Molly, obviously one of Wendy's ancestors. Dale seems to relish the humor and derring-do of this energetically paced story, which is sprinkled with comic scenarios. Fans of Barrie's original will get a kick out of learning the imagined origins of Neverland, Captain Hook (and his crocodile nemesis) and Peter's airborne prowess. Racing from ship to shipwreck on a mysterious island, listeners will be enthralled, eager to see what comes of the dust-ups and battles between these clashing crews. Ages 10-up. (Sept.)" Peter and the Starcatchers is a truly imaginative story about how Peter, orphan boy, becomes Peter Pan, flying boy. The story also explains how the feared pirate Black Stache becomes Captain Hook, and the origin of mermaids, gods and goddesses among other things. Well worth buying as it will be read again and again.

As to the audio version, I didn't think Peter and the Starcatchers could be improved, but I was wrong. Jim Dale (narrator for the Harry Potter series) absolutely brings Peter to life. I played the CDs for my kids while we ran errands or went on trips. The kids didn't want to leave the van-- a first! My daughter even opted for listening to the rest of the book in her room over watching a movie, yet another first. I plan to bring the other two Starcatcher audio books with us on our long family vacation and confidently look forward to a car trip without fights-- that will be a first indeed!!!
