Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Energy Storage: A Nontechnical Guide, by Richard Baxter, is a complete resource on the operation of energy storage technologies and how they interact in the marketplace today. Baxter explains new opportunities for these technologies, detailed descriptions of the technologies and their market applications, and business opportunities energy storage technologies can expect throughout the industry. The book explains how, and under what conditions, energy storage technologies can become a vital component of the electric power industry.

Book News Annotation:

This clearly written guide offers policymakers, energy industry analysts and executives, and concerned citizens an understanding of how energy storage technologies can support and enhance distribution and of the many advantages a distributed supply strategy holds over continued centralization of power production. In the context of market forces and business opportunities, Baxter, a seasoned engineer and analyst, discusses storage technologies—such as pumped-hydro storage, compressed air, various kinds of flow batteries, electrochemical capacitor, superconducting magnetic energy storage—and applications issues, including cycling, ownership costs, commodity arbitrage, blackstart, frequency regulation, voltage regulation, peak shaving, and regenerative energy, among others. He also discusses renewable energy and storage—e.g. remote power, dispatchable wind, wind capacity firming—as well as the economics of the new energy future.
