Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

My wife, her 91 year old father and I all enjoyed this story. It brought back memories of my father-in-laws situation
when he was in an assisted living home. My wife and I brought him into our home 6 years ago and he has been thriving
ever since. We had some good laughs about the assisted living home. Many of the nurses and residents in the story could have been at his assisted living home. And we all remember going to the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus when we were young. The story brought us some happy memories.

If you saw the movie, please dont hold it against the book. The characters are so alive and the stories within the story are so interesting, I found it hard to put the book down. It made me laugh. It made me cry. I highly recommend this book.
