Book News Annotation:

Washington State native and resident Loewen describes her three seasons as a young climbing ranger on Mt. Rainier. General readers--particularly outdoors aficionados--will enjoy her reflections on the challenges of being a female in a male-dominated profession, the realities of carrying out both successful rescues and tragic recoveries, and how her ranger experiences fit into the bigger scheme of life. No subject index. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Synopsis:

This funny and sometimes cringe-inducing story tells of a young woman's experience as a climbing ranger on Mt. Rainier, where respect is hard won and on-the-job performance can be the difference between life and death.

I loved this book! As a climber, I appreciate Loewen's acknowledgment of the physical and mental challenges she struggled through. Her descriptions brought her stories to life and gave me an idea of the harsh world she faced while working on Rainier. The dry, self deprecating and humorous style made this an exceptional climbing book and I think it would enthrall non-climbers as well. Raw, and tough.....and a macaroni and cheese eating delight. I loved the level of detail and personal introspection, great book!

Acceptable risk: Don’t you mess with me! Wow. I can’t believe that things like this happen in real life, it makes climbing for sport look like…sport. Climbing Rangers need to unionize. Read this book. It is CRAZY.
