Staff Pick
The most powerful thing about Studs Terkel's Working is that the same logic applies whether you're a highfalutin CEO or an overworked, underpaid waitress: If you do something you like — no matter what the wage — you'll like your job. If you hate your work, you'll dislike your life no matter how much money they throw at you. In this new illustrated adaptation, you'll read fascinating accounts from all walks of life and end up asking yourself: "Why do we still have to work at all?" Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:In the thirty-five years since Pulitzer Prize-winner Studs Terkel's Working first documented the American workers' hopes and dreams, that "deep penetration of American thought and feeling" (Los Angeles Times) has sold over a million copies, captivating readers with accounts of how their fellow citizens make a living. A masterpiece of words, it is now adapted into comic book form by Harvey Pekar, the perfect artist to do these voices justice. Pekar, the blue-collar anti-hero of his American Book Award-winning comics series American Splendor, brilliantly scripts and arranges Terkel's interviews, collaborating with both established comics veterans and some of the comic underground’s brightest new talent, selected by editor Paul Buhle.
Review:"Pekar (American Splendor; Our Cancer Year) adapts Terkel's masterpiece of oral history in this loving tribute. Working features various artists, including Sharon Rudahl (A Dangerous Woman: the Graphic Biography of Emma Goldman), Terry LaBan (Edge City) and frequent Pekar collaborator Gary Dumm (Students for a Democratic Society: A Graphic History). Though several of Pekar's colleagues have connections with the labor movement or activism, this volume does not push a particular political or social agenda. It simply adds dimension to Terkel's original, illustrating the daily concerns of working men and women. As is typical in collections, some of the pieces are stunning, while others merely adapt the story. Two standouts are 'Jack Spiegel: Organizer' and 'David Reed Glover: Stockbroker,' perfectly illustrated by Peter Gullerud and Pablo G. Callejo, respectively; Gollerud's stark woodcuts recall the art of the labor movement, while Callejo's meticulous detail and use of shading reflect the claustrophobia of a desk job. This collection will capture the interest of Pekar fans and Terkel aficionados alike, particularly in light of Terkel's death last year." Book News Annotation:The late Studs Terkel is best known for his oral histories of common American people. His 1974 book, Working, collecting stories in which (as the subtitle read) People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do, was critically acclaimed and has already been adapted into a Broadway show and a radio broadcast. Now, Harvey Pekar, the underground comic book writer best known for his autobiographical American Splendor, working together with 16 other comic artists, has transformed the oral histories of a stock broker, a labor organizer, a supermarket box boy, a proofreader, an airline reservationist, a gravedigger, a mail carrier, a jazz musician, and others originally appearing in the pages of Working into a graphic novel that visually depicts, in widely varying styles, the everyday experiences of labor in the United States.
