Since earning an MA in writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University, Caragh M. O'Brien has published a number of romance novels for adults. Currently, she teaches high school in Connecticut. This is her first novel for young adults.

Though the idea is good it is hard to stay hooked with this book. I was sitting in a room where a group of people were watching a boring episode of something I had already seen and when faced with the decision of the book or the episode I chose the episode. The book needed to have a better hook at the begining and kept that going throughout the entire thing.

This isn't as well-thought-out as some of the other dystopian fantasies I've read lately -- in terms of believable characters, it's closer to say, The Dead-Tossed Waves than Catching Fire -- but I gave it extra points for un-put-downable-ness; I kept almost overrunning my lunch hour because I got wrapped up in the book. I like the way O'Brien explores the way that ordinary people get wrapped up in protest, and also demonstrates the way that everyone has a line that they are very much afraid to ...more This isn't as well-thought-out as some of the other dystopian fantasies I've read lately -- in terms of believable characters, it's closer to say, The Dead-Tossed Waves than Catching Fire -- but I gave it extra points for un-put-downable-ness; I kept almost overrunning my lunch hour because I got wrapped up in the book. I like the way O'Brien explores the way that ordinary people get wrapped up in protest, and also demonstrates the way that everyone has a line that they are very much afraid to cross: the way that Masister Khol was willing to pass a note from a prisoner, but deeply resents getting dragged further into any illegal activities, or the way that some of the families within the Enclave are torn between their support of the Enclave and their growing awareness that something is deeply wrong. I think some of this could have been handled better, but it still makes for a fascinating read. I hope that O'Brien continues to hone her abilities as a YA author, and I look forward to reading her future work
