Cookbooks are an under-rated literary genre. I'm talking about those treasured tomes that explore the story behind the amazing kugel recipe from Grandma Silverman, that explain in delicious detail why So-and-So's uncle's green chile sauce is the best for chicken enchiladas, bar none. And, the photos. Lovingly arranged step-by-step photo essays recounting the transformation of simple ingredientes-flour, butter, apples--into that amazing galette that *anyone* could make...well, that is food porn at its best.

Mother's Best is my idea of great fireside reading--with the oven pre-heating to 350 degrees--precisely because it shares the stories behind the artfully unpretentious comfort food served at Mother's restaurant in downtown PDX. I've tried about half the recipes in the book so far, with not one disappointing result. If you're idea of a good time is poring over great recipes, then strapping on that apron and going for it, then get Mother's Best. And try the meatballs.

I love this book. As did my mother and both of my sisters... who received copies from me for xmas. What an absolute joy to read!! The photographs are as rich and delicious as the food described in the wonderful recipes. I adore the Love Notes that are scattered throughout the book, explaining process and techniques. It's like having your mother over your shoulder... telling HOW to do it -- not just what ingredients to add. I can't wait to make the Pot Roast and Chocolate Chubbies. If there is 1 cookbook you buy this year, there is no reason to look at another. You will LOVE this.
