About the Author

Jennifer Megyesi and her husband own and run the Fat Rooster Farm in Vermont. She holds a master's degree in wildlife biology and has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Her farm is currently breeding Cuckoo Marans chickens, famed for laying chocolate-colored eggs. She lives on the farm with her husband and son in Royalton, Vermont.Geoff Hansen is a photographer and editor at the Valley News in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He has published in Newsweek, USA Today, and The New York Times. He lives in Tunbridge, Vermont, with his wife, daughter, and two beagles.

Combine two parts how-to with one part story telling and you have a read that not only convinces readers they are capable of preserving a year's worth of food, but makes them yearn to do it. In The Joy of Keeping a Root Cellar, Jennifer Megyesi passes down generations of knowledge on planting, growing, harvesting, canning, freezing, pickling, and storing a bounty of fruits and vegetables, as well as methods for preserving eggs, dairy, and meat. If one could travel back in time and spend a year on an ancestor's homestead, they would be hard-pressed to learn more than what's taught here. Liberally peppered with stories and anecdotes, the author addresses the modern day struggle to connect with our food and the earth that provides it. This is a book you will reference frequently for many years to come.
