Red Cat, Blue Catby Jenni Desmond
Synopses & Reviews
The accurately-named Red Cat and Blue Cat share a house and mutual antagonism. But each also secretly wishes that they could have some of the other's signature traits--Blue Cat is a smartypuss who's good at opening cans and the fridge; Red Cat can bounce across rooftops and zoom up the drapes. After two attempts to change to the other's color don't pan out, each instructs the other in the art of being the cat that they are not. And though Blue Cat and Red Cat try very hard to be a different sort of cat, the real change happens when they become friends. Until they spot Yellow Cat...who sings...really, really well...and the friends consider whether a new hue might be the way to go!
"Themes of jealousy and identity intertwine in this cleverly designed book about two emotive cats — one with red stripes, the other splotchy blue — who are always fighting, but secretly admire each other's talents. Airy background scenes with precisely detailed household objects accompany naÃ‛¯f illustrations of the mutually envious felines. At least one tiny mouse can be found on each spread, and debut talent Desmond's often hilarious artwork expands on her understated prose with great success. First, the cats attempt to change their colors in order to be more like the other ('If I turn myself red, I will become fast and bouncy!' thinks Blue Cat, who gobbles strawberries, rose petals, and other red foods). Predictably, the cats become friends while accepting themselves for who they are, yet Desmond thwarts expectations with the late introduction of a talented new cat; endpapers stage a repeat of the two cats' attempts to change their colors, only this time with the desire to be yellow. With tongue-in-cheek humor, Desmond kneads at the complex emotions underlying friendships, without overemphasizing the message about appreciating oneself. Ages 4 — up. Agent: The Bright Agency. The classic "be yourself" theme is given a charming twist in this purr-fect friendship story.
Fur flies and feline friendships form as cats of different colors find that, with a little effort, they make a purr-fect blend! Rising star Jenni Desmond's picture book debut was praised by the New York Times for "captivating drawings, a generous dose of humor, adept storytelling, and spot-on detail."
