I bought this book earlier this year, and now I turn to it constantly for clean, wildly inspired whole-grain recipes that appeal to everyone (even my toddler!). Krissoff's roots are southern, and her recipes run the gamut from pimiento cheese and catfish larb to brown rice "krispy treats" made with tahini and dark chocolate. Many of the recipes are gluten-free, and Krissoff provides a comprehensive guide to cooking and swapping grains to accommodate dietary needs and limited pantries. If you've ever wondered what to do with Forbidden Black Rice, or just want to perk up your morning bowl of oatmeal, Whole Grains for a New Generation is the best resource available.

Praise for Whole Grains For a New Generation:

“These days, plenty of folks have chosen to eat lighter and make whole grains and legumes a large part of their diets. Liana Krissoff . . . make[s] a convincing case for the change, showing how adding hearty and delicious grains will enhance any diet. But it’s not a strict vegetarian guide; many of the recipes do have meat—long-braised pork with grits and cilantro-chile-lime sauce, for instance. Don’t skip the introduction, a primer on the buying, storing, substituting and cooking of numerous grains.” —Detroit Metro Times

Whole Grains belongs in everyone’s kitchen.” —Buffalo Spree magazine

Brown rice, whole-wheat flour, and oatmeal. Maybe corn? Is quinoa a grain? If those are the only whole grains you can think of, get ready to have your mind blown! Liana Krissoff introduces readers to a variety of deliciousness in “Whole Grains for a New Generation.” She starts off with introductions, including such lesser known beauties as amaranth, millet, and sorghum, offering descriptions and basic cooking instructions. She follows up with more recipes than you can shake a stick at. Try Buttermilk Oatcakes for breakfast, a Sprouted Wheat Berry Salad with Avocado and Pickled Red Onion for lunch, or Amaranth-Crusted Baked Catfish for dinner. For dessert, try Sweet Lemon Quinoa Custards with Papaya Syrup. Krissoff includes recipes for homemade condiments, breads, side dishes, appetizers, and more. Both meat-eaters and vegetarians will find ideas here, and easy substitution instructions make every recipe versatile; if you can't find spelt berries, you can just as easily use buckwheat groats or wild rice. Some recipes are complex, others are simple, and most ingredients should be obtainable at either your regular grocery store or your local health food store. Get ready to give some new grains a try!
