Publisher Comments:

It is the year 2059. Several major world cities are under the control of a security force called Scion. Paige Mahoney works in the criminal underworld of Scion London, part of a secret cell known as the Seven Seals. The work she does is unusual: scouting for information by breaking into others minds. Paige is a dreamwalker, a rare kind of clairvoyant, and in this world, the voyants commit treason simply by breathing.

But when Paige is captured and arrested, she encounters a power more sinister even than Scion. The voyant prison is a separate city — Oxford, erased from the map two centuries ago and now controlled by a powerful, otherworldly race. These creatures, the Rephaim, value the voyants highly — as soldiers in their army.

Paige is assigned to a Rephaite keeper, Warden, who will be in charge of her care and training. He is her master. Her natural enemy. But if she wants to regain her freedom, Paige will have to learn something of his mind and his own mysterious motives.

The Bone Season introduces a compelling heroine — a young woman learning to harness her powers in a world where everything has been taken from her. It also introduces an extraordinary young writer, with huge ambition and a teeming imagination. Samantha Shannon has created a bold new reality in this riveting debut.

Review:

"Shannon offers up a richly imagined debut, opening a projected seven-book series about clairvoyants used as catspaws in the year 2059, two centuries after mysterious events changed the world. Paige Mahoney possesses the illegal and extremely rare power of dreamwalking, using it to serve a criminal syndicate in a London controlled by the organization known as Scion. She's captured and sent to Sheol I, a hidden penal colony established in Oxford and maintained by the extradimensional Rephaim. Claimed by the enigmatic Warden Arcturus, she's trained to be a weapon, all the while dreaming of rebellion and escape. When Paige is drawn into schemes both political and far-reaching, she must fight for her life. The internal mythology is complex and intriguing, the emotional struggle is captivating, and the pace rarely falters as Paige unravels the mysteries and dangers of her new home. This extremely strong beginning will have readers eager to see whether Shannon can maintain her stride for a lengthy series. Agent: David Godwin, David Godwin Associates. (Aug.)" The first few chapters of this book are a bit slow and confusing but once you get through it, this book is amazing! It is unique and exciting and I absolutely couldn't put it down. I have recommended it to all my friends and family and plan to give it out as christmas gifts this year. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out!

The Bone Season is the first in a planned seven-part series from a startlingly talented young author from England. While The Bone Season had its clear shortcomings--namely the worldbuilding at parts was scattered and disorganized and the overall plot trended toward the formulaic--the story itself is intensely compelling. The main character, Paige, is well realized and well written. She's easy to relate to and should connect with many readers, both male and female, with her tenacity, stubbornness, and street smarts. She's fiercely loyal, even of people who haven't been the kindest to her, and certainly has her shortcomings. The tension builds steadily and the overall conflict is solid and true. I'll try not to say anymore for fear of spoilers!

The Bone Season is one part alternate history, one part urban fantasy, and one part dystopia without sacrificing itself on any of those genres. It should be a hit with people who enjoyed The Hunger Games, Neverwhere, and/or Wicked Lovely. It's a book about choices, loyalties, and sacrifices. Despite its shortcomings, it's definitely worth the read and I'll be eagerly looking forward to the rest of the series.
