A firsthand look at one of the worlds most livable cities, this fun take on the guidebook genre explores the atmosphere of Portland, Oregon, versus detailing its landmarks and restaurants. It both explains and embraces how beautiful and ridiculous Portland life can be, and includes essays on everything from the rain and bicycling to beards and tater tots. With its approachable and often hilarious tone, this book is perfect for anyone who wants to learn more about the city that is earning its way onto more and more top cities lists each year.

As a born-and-bred Portlander, I often find myself rolling my eyes at the antics happening around me. The most recent? The uprising of lovers of the carpet at the PDX Airport--so much that there are news articles being written about it and what's this? SOCKS? Seriously folks, I love it too, but it's carpet. From the '90's. I can't even imagine what lies beneath it after that many years.

"This is Portland" is one of those books that affirms that I am not alone. While I may love this city, there is much hilarity to be found in the neurosis of its inhabitants. Barrett does a wonderful job of exhibiting some of the most beloved quirks with great humor and fondness.

A fun and quick read full of funny and thoughtful essays that perfectly sum up what makes Portland the city that it is. Perfect souvenir to bring back to non-Portlanders!

Love this little book. I get a copy for all our friends/family who visit. As a recent transplant to PDX from the East Coast this book perfectly encompasses all the things that make Portland Portland, that I, at least was unable to put into words. Great short read, awesome gift to send to someone looking to visit or thinking about moving or even those who already live here.
