Publisher Comments:

Insight Guide Scandinavia is your comprehensive guide to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Full-color photos throughout combine with lively text to inspire you to discover this vast and fascinating region.

Our inspirational Best of Scandinavia section outlines top attractions and activities not to miss, while features by local writers cover a whole range of subjects – from taking the Hurtigruten postal boat up the coast of Norway to tour the fjords to sleek Danish design and the popularity of Nordic cuisine. We explore the Scandinavian love of the great outdoors, and what to do if you’re invited for a glass of schnapps.

Lively and engaging essays on History and Culture cover a wide range of subjects, from the legacy of the Vikings to the food and drink, while the Places chapters will help you plan your trip to this natural landscape of sparkling fjords and rocky mountains, glassy lakes and rushing rivers, dense forests and frozen tundra.

The capital cities of Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm and Helsinki are given the detailed attention they deserve to help you plan your trip. These vibrant cities house some of the most inspirational museums and finest art collections in Europe, with concerts and festivals bringing music and life to the streets; and Turku was deservedly chosen as a European Capital of Culture in 2011.

Major sites are cross-referenced with the detailed maps to help you get around, while the travel tips give you all the planning information you’ll need, and our writers give you their personal recommendations about where to eat and where to stay.

Joan Gannij

When Joan Gannij relocated to Amsterdam from the United States, she planned to discover the southern climes of Spain, Italy and Portugal. Instead she headed north on her assignments, first to Finland and then to Norway, developing her expertise in Nordic culture over the past decades.
