Publisher Comments:

It is the 31st millennium, and humanity is at the peak of its powers. As the Great Crusade, led by Warmaster Horus, continues to conquer the galaxy, Fulgrim, Primarch of the Emperor’s Children, leads his warriors into battle against a vile alien foe. From the blood of this campaign are sown the seeds that will lead this proud Legion to treachery, taking them down the darkest of paths of corruption. Leading up to the carnage of the Dropsite Massacre on Isstvan V, this is the tale of Fulgrim's tragic fall from grace.

The Fat Englishman, April 28, 2014 (view all comments by The Fat Englishman)
Fulgrim and Ferrus Manus, the Phoenix and the Gorgon. Two titanic forces of human ingenuity and warfare, perhaps two of the most iconic figures in the Warhammer 40000 universe. The enormous pressure of committing this battle between two demigods amid the ruin of two legions and an entire planet to paper is a task I don't envy Graham McNeill for, but one that I feel he excels at spectacularly.

Graham is a good balance of humors between the styles of Dan Abnett - who is gifted most at the hurried pace of warfare and brutality - and Aaron Dembski-Bowden - whose talent lies strongest in the envisioning of the world his writing takes place within. Add the flair for drama and theater that is usually the hallmark of James Swallow and you will find something that resembles Graham's multi-faceted ability. Not too much of either of his Black Library cohorts, but not too little either.

Fulgrim is an absorbing tale that perfectly captures the bright beginning of the Emperor's children legion, until their tragic encounter with the Laer. Fulgrim's slow descent into insanity, and the madness that leads him against his fellow primarch, is expertly captured by Graham, to the point where I could picture every facet of Fulgrim's thoughts and emotions in my mind's eye; right down to the simple terror of his realization about his ill-gotten sword.

But I should stop there before I ruin the story. Buy it. READ IT. In a series filled with gems, this book is so far one of the biggest diamonds.
