Diary of an Emotional Idiot

by Maggie Estep

Diary of an Emotional Idiot Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With deapan honesty Maggie Estep strips her characters and readers to the bone in this tale of Zoey, a receptionist at a S&M dungeon in New York.

Synopsis:

Zoeys fevered existence is sketched in alternating chapters of past and present. Her past buzzes with memories of a Catholic girlhood. Her present is still more addled, penning smutty books and acting as receptionist for women in leather. Author Estep — who has performed slam poetry on MTV and appeared on the Charlie Rose Show, PBS, and other venues — avoids the twin pitfalls of maudlin compassion and phony redemption in this vivid tale.

Synopsis:

"Copy of an Emotional Idiot tells the story of Zoe, a smut writer, a receptionist at a dungeon in New York City, and a self-described "emotional idiot." The chapters alternate between Zoe's life as a child, growing up with a father who was shattered in a parachuting accident and worked as a horse trainer, and her life as an adult, writing smut and answering the phone for the dominatrices who rule the dungeon. Possessing only "a touch of sadism" herself, Zoe experiences her first kiss at age twelve, sweaty and struggling on the floor of a school bus on the return trip from summer camp. That first kiss is precursor to her messy, chaotic relationships as an adult.
