"Happily for members of the Alex Robinson cult their patience has been rewarded. Tricked avoids the sophomore slump by a considerable margin with Robinson taking his formula of intense, character-driven narratives and bold illustration to a new level....A satisfying combination of inspired narrative and stimulating visuals, Tricked sets the bar for its creator and the graphic novel genre even higher."

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

From the Eisner award-winning creator of Box Office Poison (voted by Wizard magazine as the best indy graphic novel of all time), comes the highly anticipated original graphic novel, Tricked. Four years in development and clocking in at 352 pages, Alex Robinson, "the master of true-to-life relationship drama" (Library Journal), has created another tour de force. Tricked follows the lives of six people — a reclusive rock legend, a heartbroken waitress, a counterfeiter, an obsessive crank, a lost daughter, and a backstabbing lover — whose lives are unconnected until an act of violence brings them spiraling in on each other. Combining intriguing characters with a story structure that is both complex and innovative, Tricked is not to be missed!

Review:

"It's been four years since Robinson's Box Office Poison won an Eisner Award, as well as the prize for best debut graphic novel at the international festival in Angoulme. It's been a long wait, but Tricked is well worth it. This dense graphic novel follows the paths of six characters who weave around one another, all finally meeting in the story's violent climax. The six are Ray Beam, a blocked and exhausted rock star; Nick, a small-time grifter; Phoebe, a daughter in search of her father; Steve, the very worst kind of music fan; Lily, a young girl drawn into Ray's artistic drama; and Caprice, a self-defeating waitress. Before the final meeting, each leads a fully realized life, whose detailed individuality and complex relationships mark Robinson as a truly gifted writer. His art is no less impressive, with clear line drawings that hone in on the subtleties of his characters' emotional lives. A master of the slice-of-life indie comic genre, Robinson brings a strong dramatic force to his work as well. Robinson's talent allows his characters to be comprehensible even when they act like spoiled jerks or sabotage their own chances for happiness — but his authorial generosity returns them all to their own best selves by the end." This is an excellent graphic novel about a number of people whose lives converge in both ordinary and extraordinary ways. It strikes me as a story that works much better in a graphic novel format than it would have as a conventional novel, which is great because I enjoy seeing stories that are clearly suited to the format. The artwork reminds me a lot of Blankets by Craig Thompson -- the art is simple and "cartoony," but still realistic, and the artist is adept at conveying emotion with such simple lines.
