Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

When Nietszche urged that we move "beyond good and evil" in his eponymous text, he was pointing to what he saw as the relativism of the terms, a relativisms that seems to have been rejected by President Bush when he proclaimed the existence of an "Axis of Evil." It is this question of the relativism or fundamentalism of good and evil that is the primary theme of the 17 essays exploring Asian-Pacific literature and culture presented in this collection by the editors (all of the U. of Western Australia). Specific topics include moral attitudes towards sexuality in Hong Kong English language literature, Australian representations of the Japanese in World War II literature, the morality of Salman Rushdie's Fury, and moralities of national and ethnic identity. Distributed in the US by ISBS.
