Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Biodiesel has powered tour buses for Neil Young, Bonnie Raitt, and Willie Nelson. Daryl Hannah's private vehicle runs on it, while Republican and Democratic politicians alike are backing its development. It's more biodegradable than sugar and less toxic than table salt, and the production process can take place on a masive industrial scale or gallon by gallon in your garage. In this essential new book, Greg Pahl shares the history of biodiesel, explains the technology in straightforward terms, and explores its exciting potential in the United States and beyond, including resources you can use to buy or make your own biodiesel.
Book News Annotation:Shortly before his mysterious death in 1923, motor engine inventor
Rudolph Diesel argued that the "use of vegetable oils for engine
fuels may seem insignificant today, but such oils may become, in the
course of time, as important as petroleum and the coal-tar products
of the present time." Championing that vision, Pahl (codirector,
Vermont Biofuels Association) describes the historical development of
biodiesel and assesses the current state of this renewable fuel
industry. Along the way he describes the processes of biodiesel
production, explores its environmental impact, looks at the use of
biodiesel fuels in Europe and the United States, and explains the
complex politics surrounding biodiesel projects.

A century later, Greg Pahl recalls that vision and shows us it is possible with Biodiesel: Growing a New Energy Economy. Biodiesel is: Biodiesel can: As the politics of energy grow bleak, visionary entrepreneurs in the biofuels industry may very well become society's next great hope-heroes to today's energy insecurity the way astronauts were to the Cold War's space race. In Biodiesel, Greg Pahl delves into the history of the biofuels industry. He assesses its recent successes and current shortcomings, and stands well prepared to estimate its future. If the political, environmental, or financial woes of our current fuel industry have you concerned, it's time to take another look at biodiesel! Synopsis:The technology of bio-based fuel is becoming increasingly popular. This text provides background information and practical advice on how to implement this new, easy, energy source.
