Who were the pioneers of the American West? Some of them we already know: European Americans who traveled across North America on horseback, in covered wagons, on foot, or sailed from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Lesser known are the immigrants who, by the 1850s, began sailing east from Southern China, primarily from the Guangdong Province. They arrived in the American West port towns of California, Oregon, and Washington. These Chinese, fleeing the hardships of their homeland, sought the same prosperity as all immigrants to America. While some Chinese found riches in Oregon's high desert, gold-mined mountains, coastal fisheries, and bustling Portland metropolis, many faced extreme racism, legal discrimination, and exploitation.

Jointly created by the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association and history students at Portland State University, this bilingual (English/Chinese) history fills a long neglected gap in immigrant history on the West Coast. In four sections, each devoted to a geographic area of Oregon, the rich — often tragic — history of the Chinese is detailed through well-researched text and a wonderful collection of photos — many from private collections not previously seen by the public.

This is an essential history of the Chinese and Chinese-Americans in the state of Oregon. It begins with why Chinese (mostly men) began to leave their homes behind and seek fortune in the west during the mid 1800s, and ends with the federal government allowing China-born American residents to become citizens so that they would participate in WWII. It includes general descriptions of the mining experience for Chinese in Oregon, and only briefly mentions specific individuals. The book has a disturbing account of a racist massacre on the shore of Snake River, and a chapter on white discrimination against Chinese people in Oregon. Dreams of the West is full of fascinating old photos, including of Portland’s Chinatown neighborhood.

An Oregonian for over 50 years, I've of course been marginally aware of Chinese cultural influence in the state--who hasn't been to Chinatown in Portland? However, until I read this book, I had no idea what a tremendous contribution has been made by the Chinese to the basic fabric of our economic success.

Did you know that CHINESE immigrants cleared 2/3 of the Oregon farmland that has been the basis of our strong agricultural presence? Did you know there were hug Chinese labor forces in the salmon canning industry and that there were Chinese gold miners in Oregon?

These and many other contributions of the Chinese to the culture and economy of Oregon are detailed in this wonderful account that includes many history pictures. I recommend this book to anyone interested in an accurate history of Oregon, which must include the contributions made by the many Chinese pioneers.
