Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The Secret Lives of People in Love is the first short story collection by award-winning writer Simon Van Booy. These stories, set in Kentucky, New York, Paris, Rome, and Greece, are a perfect synthesis of grace, intensity, atmosphere, and compassion. Love, loss, frailty, human contact, and isolation are Van Booy's themes. In radiant prose he writes about the difficult choices we make in order to retain our humanity and about the redemptive power of love in a violent world.

Review:

"Van Booy's prose is as economical as it is powerful. His characters are so real — and their stories so poignant — that I yearned to reach out and assure them of my understanding." Caroline Upcher

Review:

"Simon Van Booy's stories have the power and resonance of poems. They stay with you like a significant memory." Roger Rosenblatt

Review:

"Van Booy is a remarkable young writer. Taste, touch, smell, sight and sound, in spite of their evanescence, are frozen for a moment in these stories and celebrated, along with their subtle interconnection, in all the aspects of love." Fred Volkmer

Review:

"[L]ovely and genuinely touching. This talented author bears watching." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"[Van Booy] shows an uncanny ability to create intense moods and emotions within the space of a few poetic paragraphs." Booklist

Van Booy is my favorite new author. Sometime back I came across this book, The Secret Lives of People in Love, and was too intrigued not to buy it. I quickly became quite taken with his writing. He writes unlike anyone else today (at least to my knowledge), with a rich and deep love of words that is evident in every paragraph. I have found myself so intrigued by a particular line or thought that I'd have to stop and ponder it for a few moments; he is that creative and that richly talented. His stories can strike such a chord within the reader; chords of memory, of meaning, of emotion, of purpose within each character and situation. It's not often that I return to re-read a book only months after originally finishing it, but this one was (and is) the exception. I sincerely recommend each of his two short story books to anyone that loves really great creative writing.
