Publisher Comments:

From Brian Wood (Demo, DMZ, Northlanders) and Ryan Kelly (Lucifer, American Virgin) comes Local, a collection of twelve interconnected short stories. Crossing genres as it crosses the country, Local examines Megan McKeenan, a young woman who sets off from Portland, OR with nothing but a backpack and a bad case of wanderlust. Each emotional vignette is a self-contained story that represents one year in the life of this young vagabond as she struggles to find a place to call home, both physically and spiritually.

Story starts in Portland Oregon - so 'locals' can get into it earlier. Next chapter - another North American city - another experience - another entree for another set of 'locals'. Our protagonist images various scenarios as she makes her next move, often from the frying pan into the fire. As the journey takes some bizarre twists & turns, we hope - we pray, that Megan will actually learn something & do it differently next time. By the middle of the 12 chapters (and 12 years), I was about ready to abandon hope, and chuck the book. Yet another series of down & out drug & alcohol abusers & abused -- don't 'comic' book artists have anything else to explore? But something drew me back, and I'm glad I persevered. Finally, a 'dark' comic that has something to say - other than dystopia. Recommended.
