Our great-grandmothers didn't need nutrition lessons — then again, they weren't forced to wade through aisle after aisle of packaged foods touting outlandish health claims and confusing marketing jargon. Over the last few decades, we've forgotten what "real food" is — and we're left desperately seeking foods that will truly nourish our bodies. We're disillusioned with the "conventional wisdom" for good reason — it's gotten us nowhere.

Achieving optimal health without calorie-counting, diet foods, or feelings of deprivation has never been easier. Practical Paleo explains why avoiding both processed foods and foods marketed as "healthy" — like grains, legumes, and pasteurized dairy — will improve how you look and feel and lead to lasting weight loss. Even better — you may reduce or completely eliminate symptoms associated with common health disorders!

Practical Paleo is jam-packed with over 120 easy recipes, all with special notes about common food allergens including nightshades and FODMAPs. Meal plans are also included, and are designed specifically to support:

  • immune health (autoimmune conditions)
  • blood sugar regulation (diabetes 1 and 2, hypoglycemia)
  • digestive health (leaky gut, IBS and IBD)
  • multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue syndrome
  • thyroid health (hypo and hyper - Hashimotos, Graves)
  • heart health (cholesterol and blood pressure)
  • neurological health (Parkinson's and Alzheimer's)
  • cancer recovery
  • fat loss
  • athletic performance
  • a "squeaky-clean" Paleo approach

Practical Paleo is the resource you'll reach for again and again, whether you're looking for information on healthy living, delicious recipes, or easy-to-understand answers to your questions about how a Paleo lifestyle can benefit you, your family, and your friends.

Review:

"Diane has made a work in Practical Paleo that is as useful as it is beautiful. Are you an athlete? Do you suffer from digestive distress? Have you been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition? Maybe you just want to live a long life and look good naked! Whatever your goals, Diane has done the heavy lifting by condensing the science and a lot of practical how-tos into bite-size pieces." Robb Wolf, New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Solution

Review:

"The recipes in Practical Paleo are nothing short of exceptional. I say this without hesitation because I tasted every single dish in this book. Watching Diane cook was inspiring, and I'm proud to say I learned much more about cooking just from being in the kitchen with her. This book will not only feed your brain with knowledge of health, but also nourish your body with outstanding recipes." Hayley Mason, co-author of Make it Paleo

Review:

"Practical Paleo is a gold mine for those new to the Paleo diet or struggling to integrate it into their everyday lives. I've always believed that personalization is the key to long-term success, and Diane's 30-Day Meal Plans will help you achieve just that. Practical Paleo will prove to be a resource I recommend to my patients and online community again and again." Chris Kresser, LA.c, integrative-medicine practitioner

What I love about this book is that the first half is a medicinal health book on how to use food to heal your body. The last half is paleo recipes, some of which are too simple for me, like how to bake bacon, but others are fantastic such as the blueberry muffins and the stuffed cabbage with tomato and cranberry sauce. If you're looking for a basic paleo cookbook to learn more about how going paleo can help with such health concerns as improving digestion, preventing cancer, and curing diabetes, look no further!

Almost exactly one year ago I decided that 27 years of unhealthy living was enough. I was tired, morbidly obese, pre-diabetic, and suffering from two autoimmune diseases that popped up almost out of nowhere in my mid-20's. I had heard the buzzword "paleo" float around here and there and browsed through this book at the store. Initially I thought it was just a cookbook, but I realized that it was so much more! The first half of the book is completely scientific, breaking down the entire digestion system and how each food group affects your body; how you should chew it, how you digest it, how it fuels you, how it is stored in your body, and how it comes out (yes, there is an entire section on poop...I said it...poop). When I saw that the book was broken down even further into sections designed for people suffering from specific ailments (obesity, autoimmune, cancer, heart problems, diabetes), I realized that this book would not only greatly benefit me and my autoimmune issues, but that I could also learn ways to help my family members suffering from other ailments.

After you get past the theory of the paleo diet as well as the science of the human body and food, you are greeted by a variety of 30-day meal plans for every type of person. No brainer, right? Diane, the author, makes it extremely easy for a newbie to get started on a paleo diet. She tells you exactly what to eat for each meal and for snacks, and provides all the recipes in the back. The recipes are diverse (some Mexican-inspired, some Indian-inspired, and plenty of good ol' American meals) and they are all easy to make. I've noticed that some paleo books either have complicated, time-consuming recipes or recipes that call for ingredients that are just too expensive, exotic and hard to find.

The first meal I made was Diane's Mustard-Glazed Chicken and - I kid you not - my neighbor came over to ask what smelled so good! It was an instant hit. I didn't use any of the 30-day plans at first, I just browsed through the pages and would pick and choose what sounded good for the day. After a month cooking from her book I lost 12lbs. I hadn't changed my physical activity at all at that point and was still as sedentary as ever. I was shocked how much my previous diet was holding me back! After three months I was down 22lbs and I started adding exercise to my weekly routine. Now it's been a year and I'm down 65lbs. One of my autoimmune diseases (LS) has been declared "in remission" by my physician and the other is so slight now that it only flares up if I eat non-paleo foods consecutively. My most recent blood work also showed that my blood sugar issues are also under control and I am no longer considered pre-diabetic either.

I know it sounds too good to be true, but I'm serious. This book saved me. This book is the foundation on which I completely changed my life and I tell everyone I know to read it!
