Nancy Rommelmann’s “Transportation stories” is one of those rare collections of exquisite prose allegories reminiscent of eighteenth century Spenser and Pope poetry whose multilayered text bounces among multiple meanings. Rommelmann’s book is the semiotic marvel of this year, having buried her meaning, deep in the nuances of humanity��"hers, yours and mine. My take on “The White Coyote”--women are always wrong in cases of rape--or it could be terrorizing children--or getting even with childhood enemies. While our female protagonist lies prostrate, pushed down by the coyote, the trainer and principal laugh at the curious animal’s behavior, who “sits quietly, stroking his penis, his eyes half closed, his mouth poised between a sneer and ecstasy….” Or find the boy, in “Tom Moore” bullied by a boy much larger than he trying to understand name-calling. After spending an hour in a sewer pipe, having his bike stolen and soiling himself young Tom plaintively asks his father “Doesn’t it bother you that he called you a faggot?” Are we in the realm of prejudice, mind the bully is obese��"he lives in his own prejudicial world��"and parent-child intergenerational miscues. Each of Rommelmann’s stories transports the reader to a different layer of meaning. Get the book to discover which level of hell this Beatrix Rommelmann will take you on her voyage through modern misery.
