Synopsis:

The beginning of a new millennium provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on the development of Romanian society over the past four centuries and to evaluate the impact that tradition and modernity has had on its evolution. For this reason the topic "Tradition and Modernity in Romanian Culture and Civilization, 1600-2000" was chosen as the theme for the Sixth International Conference of the Center for Romanian Studies, held in Iasi, Romania, in July 2000. During the sessions held at the Palace of Culture in Iasi, participants discussed the impact of tradition and modernity on Romanian culture and civilization over the past four centuries in the areas of history, politics, sociology, literature, religion, and culture. This volume is a collection of the papers presented at this important international conference.
