Jefferson had the original Journals deposited at the Philosophical Society (where they remain today.) Reuben Thwaites was chosen to edit the publication for Dodd Mead. One thousand copies were printed in 1904-05, in three editions. This copy is the large paper edition in which two hundred numbered copies in fourteen parts and an atlas were printed on Van Gelder handmade paper with Karl Bodmer prints. Sue, Powells.com
Description:Fifteen volumes including the atlas. Folios bound in green buckram with gold decoration and untrimmed. #25 of 200. Ex-library set. Each volume has: some discoloration on lower spine; perforated library stamp on lower fore-edge of title page; library number pencilled on verso of title page followed by small numeric stamp; book plate of Mr. James A. Hill on front paste down & Hill Reference Library stamped on last page. Vol.1 pt1: small spine split at p. 16; Vol. 1 pt2: Frontis detached; Vol. 2, pt1: spine split at p. 104; Vol. 3, pt1: paper repair on title page; Vol. 4, pt2: Frontis detached at spine (7 mm). The atlas is in very good condition with some small tears which are not intrusive to maps or charts, and its creases a bit foxed. All edges bumped and rubbed. Scarce set in good condition.
