Synopses & Reviews
Description:
Eliot Coues gave the apocryphal editions their nickname. As the rather lengthy title states, these editions are compiled from other works already in print by 1809. The work draws upon Alexander Mackenzie's Voyages, Jefferson's Message of 1806, Gass's Journal, Carver's Travels and Clark's Letters.
The map is most interesting. It is the earliest published map with legends stemming from Lewis and Clark (Wheat, Transmississippi West 2: map 294, p.211.) While there is no graphic scale, it is about 325 miles to an inch. The first authorized account of the Corps of Discovery would not appear until 1814. The public was hungry for information on the wild west and in particular the Indian tribes. This fascinating piece of history filled the void. The work appeared in a number of editions both in England and America. Sue, Powells.com
