The best and most useful gardening book I own. If you live anywhere along the coastline of northern California, this is practically the only gardening book you can trust (or need). Much of the advice found in other books (and endlessly repeated in newspapers, even here) is inappropriate for our climate. Pierce debunks that, deciphering seed packet instructions (such as "plant as soon as soil can be worked" or "three weeks before last frost"), and provides no-nonsense guidance on everything from soil building to harvest times and recipes. Indispensable for anyone gardening in Sunset Zones 16 or 17.
