Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In the first edition of Fun Works, Leslie Yerkes disposed of the myth that fun and work are mutually exclusive. Using examples, strategies, ideas, resources, tools, tips, techniques, and interviews with 11 real-life organizations, Yerkes showed that any company can become a place where people love to work. In this updated and expanded second edition of the best and classic work on how to bring fun into business culture, Leslie Yerkes has conducted follow-up interviews with all of the case studies featured in the first edition to see how the principles presented in the first edition have progressed across the last five years. Looking at places like Southwest Airlines, Pike Place Fish, and Prudential, she explores the secrets that enable companies to maintain a prosperous and fun environment in the face of recession, national tragedy, and natural disaster.

Book News Annotation:

Using examples from successful companies like Southwest Airlines and Prudential Insurance, Yerkes shows how creating an atmosphere of fun in the workplace can bring impressive results in the areas of productivity and profitability. All of the original cases have been updated for the second edition. The volume concludes with a "Fun/Work Fusion Inventory" self-assessment. Consultant Yerkes is also the co- author of 301 Ways to Have Fun at Work. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Great book, expanding substantially on the first edition inasmuch as Yerkes has revisited the companies to bring back new findings, and, she has also significantly deepened her discoveries about fun at work.

Basically, fun at work fits into a much bigger picture, a picture concerned with positively supporting commitment, performance, and a sense of espirit de corps.

Yerkes makes the case for a much more sophisticated organizational treatment of personnel. This is given by what she terms 'soft science.' It makes sense but you'll have to read her excellent book to experience the arrow hitting the bullseye!
