Rhees (b. 1860) places himself at The Newton Theological Institution in 1900, but he is otherwise not identified. He produced what must be one of the earliest accounts of the historical Jesus, long before modern biblical studies had established standards. It was never reprinted, but the publishers have reset and re-indexed it, dropped an appendix of literature they consider of limited application today, and added Dor<'e> woodcuts to the beginning of each chapter.
