Gabriel's Story

by David Anthony Durham

Gabriel's Story Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Review:

"Fifteen years old and black in the post-Civil-War West, the hero of this novel is as outside as an outsider can be; he has every qualification for the self-sufficiency that enables the classic confrontations of cowboy, Indian and nester." The New York Times Book Review, Summer Reading 2001 selection

Review:

"Gabriel's Story is a stunning debut. Artfully plotted, masterfully written, this is a work of shimmering intensity and wisdom. Durham's love of language and command of metaphor combine with superb storytelling, producing a work that will linger long in the reader's heart and mind. Gabriel's Story will easily stand in the first ranks of American literature." Jeffrey Lent, author of In the Fall
