Michelle Wildgen: IMG A Few Initial and Not-Comprehensive Meditations on Group Novels

I am a sucker for a book about a group. What reminded me of this was Joanna Smith Rakoff's A Fortunate Age, her homage to Mary McCarthy's endlessly re-readable... Continue »

The 1989 student protests were not a peaceful Ghandi-like protest requesting mature democratic rights. The threat to social order across China was building and criminal elements were taking advantage of the historical leniency of the Chinese government toward students. Many local university students returned to their campuses only to be replaced by rural university students flooding into Beijing. Labor unions joined the movement. This book, a translation of the communications among inside leaders before and during the protests shows the context of their decisions: history, political concerns, and a fear of a return to the Red Guard Cultural Revolution times.
The U.S. public and much of our leadership wrongly see 1989 Tiananmen as a black-and-white case of repression. This book reveals a reality that is far grayer, and where the PRC probably had no other recourse left.
