Blue Shoes and Happiness (No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency)by Alexander M Smith
Powells.com Staff PickEscape to Botswana with one of the most consistently engaging (not to mention unique) series in publication. Haven't read the previous six episodes? No sweat. There's never been a better time to join Precious Ramotswe — against all odds, these subtle, sweet mysteries improve with each installment.
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:In this seventh installment in the internationally bestselling, universally beloved series, there is considerable excitement at the shared premises of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors.
A cobra has been found in Precious Ramotswe's office. Then a nurse from a local medical clinic reveals to Mma Ramotswe that faulty blood-pressure readings are being recorded there. And it looks as though Aunty Emang, the advice columnist in the local newspaper, may not be what she seems. It all means a lot of work for Mma Ramotswe and her inestimable assistant, Grace Makutsi, and they are, of course, up to the challenge. But there's trouble brewing in Mma Makutsi's own life. Her greedy uncles are demanding an extra-large bride price from her well-to-do fiancé, a man of substance, Phuti Radiphuti, and though money may buy her that fashionably narrow (and uncomfortable) pair of blue shoes, it won't buy her the happiness that Mma Ramotswe promises her she'll find in simpler things – in contentment with the world and enough tea to smooth over the occasional bumps in the road. Review:"The seventh entry in the No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency series (after 2005's In the Company of Cheerful Ladies) reaffirms Smith's considerable gifts as a writer. His familiar characters offer further facets of their personalities, and their gentle, tolerant approach to life remains a refreshing contrast to most fictional figures, let alone those populating most mysteries. The author's love for his creations and for his Botswana setting are evident on every page. While the plot will be of secondary importance to fans of Precious Ramotswe, the 'traditionally-built,' self-taught private detective, and her assistant, Grace Makutsi, Smith presents them with several mysteries, including the search for the identity of a blackmailer and the source of malaise at a nearby game reserve. Ramotswe's intuition and understanding enable her to find the truth, while dispensing justice according to her own personal dictates. Even newcomers will be charmed by this wonderful novel, with its skillful blend of humor and pathos, and will doubtless rush to catch up with the earlier books." Review:"Scotsman McCall Smith renders brisk, seamless tales that are both wry and profound.... 'In Botswana,' he writes, 'ties of kinship, no matter how attenuated by distance or time, linked one person to another, weaving across the country a human blanket of love and community.' It is those ties and that sense of community that continue to make this series so appealing to both genre and nongenre readers." Allison Block, Booklist (starred review)

Janet Malcolm, The New York Times Book Review Review:“Enthralling . . . [Mma Ramotswe] is someone readers can’t help but love.”
USA Today Review:“Thoroughly original . . . Vivid, affectionately rendered details of everyday Botswana life . . . A pleasure.”
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Review:Praise for In the Company of Cheerful Ladies:
• National Bestseller “Beloved Botswana sleuth Precious Ramotswe is back – and better than ever – in this sixth entry in McCall Smith’s bestselling series. . . . By turns laugh-out-loud funny and quietly profound, these life-affirming mysteries are fine company, indeed.” –Booklist, starred review “Like clove oil on a bad tooth, McCall Smith’s fiction acts on cynicism as an effective, old-fashioned balm.” –The Globe and Mail “May be the most compelling of the lot. . . . It begins with an incident that crystallizes McCall Smith’s skill. Ultimately it is a matter of petty thievery, but his handling of it dramatizes the moral underpinnings of these books. . . . [Mma Ramotswe’s] strength – and the source of her enormous appeal – is her understanding of the human heart, and her willingness to confront its perfidies.” –New York Daily News “These books offer a sunnily lit window into another world, along with a modicum of relief from certain aspects of modern Western culture. They never descend into mere escapism, though. A few hours spent with Precious Ramotswe and her friends is always time well spent.” –St. Louis Post-Dispatch “[The] sixth entry in McCall Smith’s consistently delightful series. . . Amid the hilarious scenarios and quiet revelations are luminous descriptions of Botswana, land of wide-open spaces and endless blue skies.” –Publishers Weekly, starred review About the AuthorAlexander McCall Smith is the author of the international phenomenon The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series and of The Sunday Philosophy Club series.
