Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Launching out into the breeze,
we sail above the darkened trees,
flying fast, to wet our feet
where land and foamy ocean meet.

With an ear for fanciful verse and an eye for humorously detailed illustrations, author/illustrator Brian Lies invites you to a nocturnal beachside romp with some fuzzy, fun-loving bats. Winsome winged wonders swoop down to the sandy shore with pails, canvas beach bags, and banjos. Children will delight as bats surf the waves, play volleyball, sing around the fire, and make friends with seagulls. Adults will appreciate Lies's signature touches of fun from the bottle of "Bain de Lune" lotion to the bag of "skeeter krisps," all captured in panoramic format with his rich palette and fine, expressive lines.

The moony weather is perfect, the beach blankets are down, the umbrellas are up, the picnic baskets are unpacked, and the fire is ready for roasting tasty bug-mallows! Most definitely not the stuff of nightmares, Bats at the Beach is the perfect book to capture bedtime imaginations. Young and old alike will want to visit this whimsical take on a day at the shore again and again.

Review:

"Where the book truly soars is in the dark yet luminescent art where bat wings glow in the light of the full moon and the sky is a steely blue. The faces on the bats are furry and friendly." School Library Journal

Review:

"Perfect for sharing with younglings of the wingless sort." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"The rhyming text, which floats white against the dark backdrops, leaves no beach activity or experience unmentioned, right down to the unpleasant feel of itchy sand....Readers will be swept right along until the sun comes up and the bats return home." Booklist

This is an adorable story about a family of bats heading to the beach for a "night out". The pictures are very good and a clever spin on what typical families do when visiting the beach. Roasting marshmellows and frog legs. It is as much fun for the adults as kids reading the story and looking at the hidden jokes in the pictures. There are two other books in the series with the library and a baseball game, but the beach is our favorite. A portion of profits go towards bat habitats. My little boy loves the book and so have my kindergarten students.

I heard this read on NPR by Daniel Pinkwater and Scott Simon and had to have it. Then my 23 year old son and his friends saw it and had to have it. A kids book for everyone! Look for all the great details in the pictures.
