Publisher Comments:

Zorba the Greek is the story of a Greek workman who accompanies the narrator to Crete to work a ignite mine and becomes the narrator's greatest friend and inspiration. Zorba has been acclaimed as one of the truly memorable creations of literature?a character in the great tradition of Sinbad the Sailor, Falstaff, and Sancho Panza. He is a figure created on a huge scale. His years have not dimmed the gusto with which he responds to all that life offers him, whether he's supervising laborers at a mine, confronting mad monks in a mountain monastery, embellishing the tales of his past adventures, or making love. Zorba's life is rich with all the joys and sorrows that living brings, and this is one of the great like-affirming novels of our time.

Synopsis:

The 50th anniversary edition of the classic novel--a perennial bestseller--is the basis for one of the most beloved films of all time. Zorba's story is as immortal as the myths and epics of ancient Greece.

This is one of those Books you'll read and Re-read so many times, it'll fall apart on you; you’ll need to replace it, every so often. As an inveterate BookWorm--who's extremely picky in my Choices of Literature--I have read Zorba the Greek a few times, already, (at least once in Portuguese, as a Teenager; a couple of times, in English, as an Adult). Zorba is to me, a Larger-than-Life, inspirational Character like Few Others, and undoubtedly, a Major Classic. Kazantsakis filled the Book with Zorba's Philosophies of Life (simple, yet, potent as they are), always prompting me to need a Notebook, and Pen nearby, for copying Quotes, for my own Inspiration. Indeed, there's one, on page 292 (1st. Edition), I loved so much I included it in all my Literature, as a Performer Advocate for the Invisibly dis-Abled, and one of my all-time Favorites, regarding Adversity: "You won't get into my soul! I shan't open the door to you! You won't put my fire out; you won't tip me over!" (Zorba, Kazantsakis - 1st. Ed. Touchstone). I've recently uncovered my Old copy of this Favorite Book of Mine, (now missing its first 50 pages), and began reading it again, yet...those missing fifty pages keep "screaming at me:'Read us! Read us'!". So, I WANT my 50 missing Pages back, and have ordered another Copy of it. A Word of Warning about the First Edition: Its binding is extremely Delicate, and the Book easily separated into Loose Sections, Chapters, which is how I lost the first 50 pages.

Otherwise, Highly Recommended! A Classic, for sure!
