In 2002, Dr. Martha Burk, chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations, wrote to the Augusta National Golf Club, host of the prestigious Masters tournament, expressing concern over the club's all-male membership policy and urging it to change.

Here we are in the 21st century, and 19th century ingrained biases are still in play! Reading Dr. Burk's book, Cult of Power, confirms and reinforces my belief that "the market" cannot, and has not, addressed social injustices. Government had to step in and correct non-market adjustments such as establishing child labor laws, a minimum wage, equal pay laws, affirmative action programs, FMLA — even the Americans with disabilities (ADA) had to go the route of Congress because the marketplace resisted equal accessibility for all in the workplace. So here we are, still being discriminated in the workplace in the epitome of all networking arenas, the golf course. Maybe it is again time for some civil disobedience to get the attention of legislators to end this discriminatory practice! Dr. Burk certainly has exhausted the "ladylike" route — it's time to get radical and legislate morality!
