Description:

Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1860. Complete in 6 volumes. Quarto. Publisher's green cloth, decorated in blind with a gilt motif to front boards, repeated in blind on rear boards. All with the half-title and extra-engraved title pages. In custom matching slipcases with red morocco title labels, fronts trimmed with green morocco.

All volumes skillfully rebacked with original spines laid down. Light chipping to edges of repaired spines, very light wear to corners and boards. Ghost markings of labels to spines, shelf designation in later hand in pen: "SR7, Scho 6, fo" in ink at top corner of front paste downs. No pages or plates are marked or stamped.

Volume 1
xxviii, 11-575pp., 75 plates. Without the plate listed as number 41 titled "Map of the Source of the Mississippi River."

Volume 2
xxiv, 17-614pp., 79 plates. Includes 2 unnumbered plates of the Cherokee alphabet.

Volume 3
xvii, 19-642 pp., 43 plates.

Volume 4
xxvi, 19-674pp., 43 plates.

Volume 5
xxiv, 718pp., 34 plates. Without plate number 9, which was never given a page designation in the "List of Plates" and most likely was never produced.

Volume 6
xxvii, 25-756pp., 57 plates, many of which are repeated from first five volumes.

Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864) was an ethnologist, explorer, geologist, and author. From his first wife Jane Johnston, who was of Ojibwe descent, he learned the Ojibwe language and folk tales. He served the US Government as an explorer and Indian Affairs agent.

A beautiful set of Schoolcraft's scarce and monumental work, in very good condition, with 330 plates.
