I am a 21 year old college student, and reading this book hit so close to home on so many levels. I am a total bookworm, and I have always felt the need to hide it behind the exterior shell that I created of being well put together and having a great social life. When I read this book, both times, I felt as if I was reading parts of my own life story. My family, although on a different caliber from Gloria Cotter's, is quite dysfunctional in its own right, and reading about the ways that Gloria dealt with her family problems, as well as her own personal dilemmas, reminded me so much of myself. I was always an outcast in elementary and junior high school and didn't really find my true self until I was in high school. However, I always had my "loser" self in the back of my mind reminding me of all of the things that I had dealt with and done to make me an outcast. I felt so close to Gloria, and I don't think that any other character that I have ever read has impacted me as much as Gloria has. Her passion for literature completely reflects on my passion for reading and immersing myself in a book or novel. On top of all of the similarities that I found between myself and Gloria, Keith Maillard's intricate, descriptive writing also surprised me. This was the first time that I had read anything by him, and he truly defined that time period, the feelings, and the lifestyle of a 1950's young woman dealing with the changes in her young life. I love this book!
