Inside Reporting: A Practical Guide to the Craft of Journalism Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This text does for reporting what Tim Harrower's The Newspaper Designer's Handbook has previously done for design: make it fun and accessible to newcomers. Harrower is an award-winning editor, designer and columnist who has previously taught at Portland State University and currently conducts journalism workshops. Inside Reporting emphasizes the basics but also provides a wealth of information on online reporting and packaging stories in more visual, interactive ways. It also includes more useful information on feature writing--from stories to reviews and column-writing--than any other text in the field.

This textbook ? brilliantly conceived, written and designed by Tim Harrower ? may be the the only "textbook" you'll ever read that is fun as well as informative. This isn't your father's reporting textbook. It's a fascinating rollercoaster ride through the world of telling stories in print. The book offers an amazing breadth and depth of the world of reporting, including a "morgue" (a newspaper's library, for the uninitiated) of great stories, quotes and interviews with practicing journalists, interactive quizzes, checklists, tips, graphics, photos ? and possibly the worst story ever written. There's even a two-page comic book story charting the ethical dilemma of a young journalist. Harrower makes learning fun. It's hip, it's cool, it's seriously funny. It's the "textbook" for the next generation, and a fascinating read for anyone who ever yearned to understand how the media creates the stories we read.
