The Book of Imaginary Beings (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)

by Borges and Hurley

The Book of Imaginary Beings (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In a perfect pairing of talent, this volume blends 20 illustrations by Sis with Borges' 1957 compilation of 116 "strange creatures conceived through time and space by the human imagination," from dragons and centaurs to Lewis Carroll's Cheshire Cat and the Morlocks of H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine."

Review:

Erudite and whimsical, a model handbook of fantastic zoology. (Michael Dirda, The Washington Post) Of all the Latin American authors in this century, [Borges] is the most universal. (Harold Bloom)

"Imaginary" is fairly equal to "esoteric", as long as most of the beings quoted in the book are, or have been, the subject of millions of people's beliefs and passions, and maybe even their discoveries across time.Just because only the mind can perceive them and not the body does not mean we should put the blame on them. It's not that they do not exist, it's that we need to upgrade the skills of human perception to see them.
