Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Flora Fyrdraaca wants nothing more than to be a ranger, and for that she must master the magickaland dangerouslanguage of Gramatica. But before she can find the ideal teacher, her aspirations are put to the test. Would a true ranger be intimidated by a tentacle that reaches for her from the depths of a toilet? Be daunted by her best friends transformation into a notorious outlaw, thanks to a pair of sparkly stolen boots? Be cowed by the revelation that only she can rescue the city of Califa from the violent earthquakes that threaten its survival?

Never. Saving her city and her best friend are the least a Girl of Spirit can doyet what Flora doesnt expect are the life-altering revelations she learns about her family and herself.

Review:

Praise for Flora Segunda:

“Highly original, strange and amusing ...treats young readers with respect.”  Diana Wynne Jones

(star) “A thoroughly original magical world marks this witty debut...Tantalizingly, the open-ended conclusion hints there might be more to come from this compelling and funny heroine.” Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“Like [Philip] Pullmans Lyra Silvertongue or [Terry] Pratchetts Tiffany Aching, Flora Fyrdraaca is a descendant of Jo March rather than a fainting beauty who needs rescuing.” The New York Times Book Review

Join Flora on her rolicking run through a someplace that is almost California [except for the evil Birdies, magical boots and some very strange clothing]. What? You don't have a Butler? And you don't know even one small word of Gramatica? You didn't read Flora Segunda? [the first book in the series] Then you definitely need to read Flora's Dare to see what you're missing.
