Janna Cawrse Esarey: IMG Powell's Q&A: Janna Cawrse Esarey

"I fell in love with Crosby, Stills, and Nash's song 'Southern Cross' when I was fifteen. By the time I got to college, 'I'm going to sail around the world someday' was sort of my pickup line." Continue »

Publisher Comments:

Will and Hand are burdened by $38,000 and the memory of their friend Jack. Taking a week out of their lives, they decide to travel around the world to give the money away. They can?t really say why they?re doing it, just that it needs to be done. Perhaps it?s something to do with Jack?s death ? perhaps they?ll find the reason later. But as their plans are frustrated, twisted and altered at every step and the natives prove far from grateful to their benefactors, Will and Hand find that the world is an infinitely bigger, more surreal and exhilarating place than they ever realised. In fact, it?s somewhere to get lost in...

Review:

"Endearing, funny...the prose is high on energy and Eggers's talents make it worth the trip" Guardian

Will and Hand, two young Americans, decide to travel around the world handing over large amounts of money to those who need it. This trip will, they hope, be an answer to the overwhelming grief they feel after their friend's death. But, as they soon find out, nothing is quite so simple.

This book threw me off with its first sentence, and proceeded almost to drag me through the main characters' adventure. Eggers' writing is outstanding and conveys Will's struggle beautifully; every feeling from triumph to desire for revenge is depicted more vividly than is realistic, with an urgency as great as that found in Will and Hand's trip. Read this book!

And, seriously, get it in hardcover. The first-page-front-cover is extremely nifty.
