Review-A-Day

"[P]erhaps it is a mistake to hold Arianna Huffington to any real standard of intellectual or journalistic rigor. She is just an adventuress, ideologically and socially; an impresario, with a practiced eye for the main chance; a media phenomenon, which is among the thinnest phenomena of all; a nimble brand. The other day I opened a book and came upon an epigraph that reminded me of her and her hunger: "I wanted to do business faster than the ordinary mercantile transactions would admit." That was said by P.T. Barnum." Isaac Chotiner, New Republic Online (read the entire New Republic Online review)

Publisher Comments:

For Arianna Huffington, the problem with the Republican Party is not that it is at odds with the views of progressives, but that its lunatic fringe has taken over the party and is at odds with the views of the American people. By significant majorities, Americans believe in the science of evolution, don't want Roe v. Wade overturned, don't want to ignore global warming, want good health care for their kids, and want to bring our troops home from Iraq.

And yet, to Huffington, the representatives of the Right seem to be competing over who among them can be the biggest Neanderthal and are having the time of their lives supporting torture, standing by the behavior of the Blackwater thugs, and backing the White House's delusions on everything from war to stem cell research. Flashing back to the Reagan era is one thing, but flashing back to the Dark Ages is quite another. And this is what Right Is Wrong will expose.

Review:

"Columnist Huffington unleashes her pen on the 'far-right cowboys' and 'lunatics' who, she says, are 'running the Republican asylum' and — with the media's help — threatening global safety, American security, health care and civil liberties. Her contribution to ongoing political debates offers well-rehearsed analyses parsing right-wing spin on the Iraq War, the justification for torture, global warming, immigration, stem cell research and health-care reform. Huffington's sallies have no trouble finding the chinks in the armor of the Bush administration, neocons like Bill Kristol or right-wing media stalwarts like Ann Coulter. While this is a serviceable election-year playbook, Huffington's populist stance may strike some as shaky given her relationship with the media she decries (she lambastes a television show for giving Ann Coulter a platform without adequately accounting for her own presence on the same program). Moreover, her distinction between the current radical right-wing leadership and Ronald Reagan's GOP fails to account for the strong continuity in terms of policies and personnel and has more rhetorical appeal than historical merit. A National Book Award — winning novelist applies her skills to nonfiction" Publishers Weekly (Copyright Reed Business Information, Inc.)

Synopsis:

The editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post tackles the issues at the heart of the 2008 presidential election with her trademark passion, intelligence, and devastating wit.

Synopsis:

With her trademark passion, intelligence, and devastating wit, Huffington Post editor in chief Arianna Huffington tackles the issues that are crucial to this year’s presidential election and, even more so, to the fate of the country.

Huffington makes the case that America has been hijacked from within by a radical element—the “lunatic fringe” of the Right that has taken over the Republican Party. Despite holding views at odds with the majority of Americans, these zealots have given us an endless war in Iraq, a sputtering economy, a health care system on life support, a war on science and reason, and an immoral embrace of torture.

But they haven’t done it on their own: they have been enabled by a compliant media that act as if there is no such thing as truth and are more interested in cozying up to those in power than in holding them accountable, and by feckless Democrats who have allowed themselves to be intimidated into backing down again and again.

Both a withering indictment and a hopeful call to arms, Right Is Wrong is an explosive, boldly incisive work that will help set the national agenda.

About the Author

Arianna Huffington is a nationally syndicated columnist, author of 11 books, and the cofounder and editor of online magazine TheHuffingtonPost.com. She lives in Los Angeles with her two daughters.

Table of Contents

“Huffington has demonstrated a gladiatorial appetite for verbal combat. Her assessments of Bill Frist, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, campaign finance, the drug war, the war in Iraq—even at a time when questioning the war against terrorism wasn’t popular—have been unflinching.”

The New Yorker

“Huffington deserves credit for cataloging the ways in which Bush...peddled fear to silence critics and build political support.”

The New York Times Book Review

Bravo Andrianna--your assessment that a passive media has allowed a coup to take place before our very eyes is right on. Thanks for having the courage to speak out and weather the slings and arrows of those who will try to discredit you. Your are a credit to your gender and your profession.

The title of the book is perfect. Nowadays, being a good citizen and speaking up for what is right is now looked upon as wrong; being moral and decent and thinking of your fellow man is wrong and these right wing extremists who commit horrific crimes, lie, steal, trade in illegal commodities, who are bringing the world to their knees, carry on their merry ways. This has to stop. Arianna needs to be on every talk show, every TV station, nationally and internationally. She is to be commended for this.
