About the Author

Sapphire was born in 1950 and spent her first twelve years on army bases in California and Texas. As a teenager she lived in South Philadelphia and Los Angeles. She graduated from City College in New York and recieved an MFA from Brooklyn College. From 1983 to 1993 she lived in Harlem, where she taught reading and writing to teenagers and adults. Sapphire is a performance poet and the author of a collection of poetry and prose, American Dreams. She lives in New York City.

This was a very good book. It deals with real-life and that's what I liked about it. It is a sad story to be told, but people need to wake up and realize what is going on around them.

I read this book when it first came out (pre-movie) and loooooooved it! I sat down and literally didn't get up until I'd read it straight through. I got so incredibly emotionally wrapped up in the beautiful main character of the book, and rooted for her the entire way. I just had to find out how her story ended.

Thankfully, it concluded with some resolution to her plight, and she was a stronger, even more beautiful person who was headed in a positive direction. The first person writing is phenomenal and really makes you feel like you're experiencing everything as it unfolds. A real treasure of a book.
