England in finite detail, this novel captures the W2 prewar and war through the altering world of a young girl entering adulthood. There is a fairy tale quality to some of the lives she enters, as well as the grief and desolating effects of war. My love of Pilcher is, was, her depictions of opulence, ordinary life, desperation and resilience of great characters with English pluck. This is an epic novel, lived in Cornwall, England where Pilcher grew up at the end of the '30's and into the early 40's, returning to own a second home there later in her life.
