I am a latecomer to this series by Louise Penny, but I've found each book in the series to be outstanding (I'm at A Rule Against Murder, so far). The writing is excellent, the books are funny, but I think what stands out the most is the humanness of the characters. Not just the villains, but all of the characters, who are good people mostly, but in some cases are obnoxious, but brilliant, or refusing to try, or distracted by a good breakfast. The books make me want to visit the village of Three Pines, despite the regular occurrence of murder there.

The Book Goddess, November 26, 2011 (view all comments by The Book Goddess)
As a huge fan of Agatha Christie's mysteries, I see why this author is so often compared to Christie. This was a cozy, small-town murder mystery story with a fascinating cast of characters. Gamache is an excellent portrayal of a modern-day Hercule Poirot. But the story has it's own voice and it's own flow, seperate from Christie mysteries, which allows it to stand on its own. Some say the story began to slowly, but I see that as a necessity when beginning a series. The background needs to be developed, as do the major characters. In all of the set-up, there were certain moments of humor that really breathed life into these characters. There is also a deep understanding of human psychology by the author, that allowed her to create very realistic actions and thought processes, not to mention the interactions among the characters. This was much more than a simple murder-mystery. There are seven stories in total in this series and I cannot wait to read them all.

Louise Penny is an amazing writer of character-driven mysteries with a strong sense of place. Still Life is our first introduction to the tiny Canadian town of Three Pines and the investigative work of Armand Gamache of the Montreal Surete. All of this is wrapped up in a wonderful prose style that had me careening through the subsequent four volumes. I am thrilled to discover her and have been recommending her to everyone.
