Book News Annotation:

Chico Mendes, internationally renowned "ecomartyr," was killed in the backlands of Brazil, on December 22, 1988, by a shotgun blast to the chest as he stepped out of his house. There has been no trial of the accused murderers. Two weeks after the murder, journalist Shoumatoff went to Mendes' home in the remote Amazonian state of Acre to try to answer the question of who killed Chico Mendes. This is his account. With 33 b&w photographs.
